Couple & Family Serving Opportunities

Joshua 24:15 says:

“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

This isn’t just a declaration but an invitation to live out your faith as a family and team. When couples serve, they model unity and humility. And in doing so, they help build a legacy of love that reaches far beyond their own home. We encourage couples to serve together. Below is a short list of some opportunities to serve as a couple or as a family in our area.

  • New Albany White Flag Shelter

This winter (November 15 – April 15th), we are partnering with the White Flag Shelter of Southern Indiana to serve our neighbors in need of a warm place to sleep and we’d love for you to join us.

White Flag opens its doors on nights when temperatures drop below 35°, offering a warm, safe place to sleep, a hot meal, and most importantly a reminder that each guest is seen and loved. As couples and families, we have a unique opportunity to serve together by preparing meals, helping with check-in, cleaning, and simply sitting down to listen and share life and a meal with someone.

Let us know if you’d like to join Brittany and Ryan on Tuesdays evenings! Send us an email to marriageatmerci@gmail.com

  • Mustard Seed Volunteering

Stop by Mustard Seed stores during open hours to volunteer, or submit a volunteer form by clicking the link below! Mustard Seed managers will be grateful for any extra help!

    Examples of volunteer tasks:

    Stamping shopping bags

    Straightening up shelves

    Creating price tags

    Hanging clothes

    Cleaning

Mustard Seed does ask that groups of volunteers fill out a volunteer form a week in advance of volunteering to give our store managers plenty of time to plan and assign duties! Email volunteer@mustardseedthrift.com if you have any questions about volunteering.

  • Jeffersonville Community Kitchen

The Community Kitchen relies on a dedicated team of about 100 volunteers to provide meals and care for those in need. Volunteers help with food procurement, preparation, serving, cleaning, building maintenance, and administrative tasks.

Due to retirements and physical limitations among longtime staff, new volunteers are urgently needed, especially in cooking and maintenance roles. Shifts typically run from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM, with flexible scheduling, whether once a week, biweekly, or monthly.

  • MERCI

Prayer is the most important way you can help us, but we are also in need of physical support. Here are areas you can help serve alongside MERCI:

Event Cleaning & Setup: Help prepare and reset the space before and after events

Mowing: Help keep the grounds neat and inviting with regular lawn care (zero turn mower & trimmers are onsite)

Landscaping: Add beauty through planting, trimming, and seasonal upkeep

Catering: Assist with meal prep, serving, and hospitality during events

Dessert Making: Bake or bring sweet treats to bless couples and guests

Gift Baskets for Fundraisers: Assemble creative, themed baskets to support MERCI’s mission at fundraisers

Marketing: Share expertise in promotion, donor engagement, and campaign strategy.

Monthly Giving: Support the ministry financially to sustain long-term impact

  • Nomad Church Collective

Serving with Nomad Church Collective is all about building relationships and sharing the love of Jesus together. As a couple, you can:

Help at the White Flag Shelter (Nov–Apr): cook dinner, check in guests, clean, or simply sit and listen.

Join Monday Night Dinner: prepare food and connect with the community over a warm meal.

Engage in relational ministry: pray, share stories, and offer hope to those on the margins.

Whether you serve weekly or occasionally, your presence matters.

  • Choices Life Resource Center

There are opportunities to serve at all three Choices center locations: New Albany, Corydon, and Salem.

    Ways to get involved include:

Leading group classes in a variety of areas that may interest you. Our center managers are happy to collaborate with you to create something meaningful. You can serve according to your availability whether weekly, monthly, quarterly, or as a one-time opportunity.

Mentoring individuals and couples. We offer opportunities for men to mentor men, women to mentor women, and for couples to mentor other couples.

If you’d like to learn more about serving with Choices, please reach out to Amy McLain, Director of Operations, at AmyM@ChoicesLRCcares.org. She would love to hear your heart for service and help you find a role that fits you best.

  • Silver Heights Camp

Whether you're guiding teens as camp counselors, preparing meals as kitchen volunteers, or welcoming guests as retreat hosts, each role offers a chance to grow closer to each other and to God.

Here are a few ways couples can serve together:

Camp Counselors: Lead devotionals, join group activities, and pray with youth in a beautiful, faith-filled setting.

Hospitality Hosts: Greet retreat guests, offer prayer, and create a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Facilities Volunteers: Work side-by-side on campus improvements—perfect for couples who enjoy hands-on service.

Food Prep Teams: Cook and serve meals together during youth camps or retreats.

Whether you’re newlyweds or seasoned partners in ministry, Silver Heights offers a place to serve with purpose and joy.
